17 Oct 1916
Dear Tunnie,
Here we are again and right glad I was to hear from you today and to know you are progressing.
Since your visit away I have heard great tales as to how you left the scrum together while the exciting game was on and I have wondered where you frifted to.
Well we are back in the trenches where we were just over two months ago and it is even quiter here than before you left.
Our old Coy is changed some now and I must tell you of some of the boys.
Hack Rawlings, Doctor Dodd and Cpl. Wells were killed in action also Capt Harley, Lts DoDo(nne?) Riley and Mkee and Privates Caddigan Maslin, Freeman, McDonald, Frandsen and (F?). G Goodwin
All the above died in the thickest of the fray where our Battalion made such a great name for itself and our Captain came through it all and has got a D.S.S. service.
Sgt. Rawlings was shot in front of the parapet I believe, throught the head and was buried with others of our Coy near where they were found.
Cpt. Clark was wounded but has rejoined and is now promoted to Sgt. Of 9 Platoon.
Sgt. Ryan is away wounded but Sgts Wheivay and Wanden are well and Sgt Hamilton has rejoined since being wounded.
The latter is A/C.S.M. at present as Sgt Wheivay has gone to a school for 8 weeks.
S (?)
V.G. Hunter is in charge of one of the platoons and Avian is a Corpl.
L/cpt.
Walker has rejoined and also Cpl. (S?)enninjour.
L. M Jenkins
(?) are still
(?)
to take
d(?) his studies immediately to avoid trouble for himself.
My brother Harold (12 th Rfls) was in our last Stunt in the Big Push and was lucky enough to come out untouched.
He was a Second Sergeant and will probably get my job here as most likely I will be joining up with the boys in the Coy shortly.
Am expecting to get my Leave any day now and if I get half a chance will run up to see you.
Sgt Coliwell has just given his regards.
With kindest regards from all the Coy and best wishes for your early recovery.
Yours sincerely
